Welcome Back To School! 2016-2017 Begins…

As the summer draws to a close and we begin preparing for the new school year there is always that sense of anticipation for what the new school year will bring.  The excitement and energy is palpable.  There is much to prepare for and I want to help with the transitions.

The first few days of school can be overwhelming for young children.  This is why we work to ensure a calm and patient atmosphere within our school.  The teachers work to maintain consistency and solid ground rules as children work well if they understand what is going to happen.  When their schedules are interrupted or they are unsure they may become upset.  Talking through changes, schedules and expectations is important for children, particularly the first few weeks of school.  Don’t expect your little one to share much about their day in the beginning.  This is not uncommon.  Let them take a few days to get to know their friends, teachers and routines.  After a week or so, they will be much more willing and able to communicate their happenings at school.  Fortunately for our parents we have implemented our new Tadpoles system of communication.  This system allows teachers to send you a short report each day along with a snapshot or two of your child’s time in the classroom.  Introduced this summer, our teachers are growing comfortable with the applications and are excited to share more of their day with you.  We do hope this will be a welcome addition to your child’s educational experience with us!

Assume that every child will have a transition each school year.  For students at this age, we assume it will take a child approximately four weeks to truly become comfortable in any new environment.  Learning all of the other student names, teacher names, expectations, classroom routines, rules, where to go, what to do and how to do it can take some time, so be patient with your child.  Don’t overwhelm them with a lot of questions about their first few days.  Focus on the positivity of the experience.  There may be tears the first few days of school.  Don’t worry, this is very common.  I like to describe the first few days of school like getting a new job.  At first, you might be a little uncertain and have a lot of questions, but as the days progress you find yourself becoming more comfortable.  The same goes for the children, however, they may not have the same communication skills you have, so give them some time to go through the process.  Second day can be harder for some than the first.  Second week can be more difficult than the first week emotionally as children become more accustomed to their routines.  Remain positive and focused on the wonderful things your child will accomplish.  Your positivity will rub off on them and they will begin to settle in as you settle in to your new routines.   School is a partnership and we want to be your partners!

Your teachers will be spending time evaluating each child on a daily basis to determine lesson planning.  Don’t forget all of our lesson plans are designed to meet the needs of each child so evaluations are crucial to ensuring your child’s classroom successes!  Practical life, Sensorial, Math, Language, History, Geography, Science, Culture and Writing are foundations of the Montessori classroom; however, teachers will also encourage social growth, physical activity and character development as the well-rounded child is paramount to a successful future. Remember that your child’s teachers not only have college degrees, but they are certified Montessori teachers with tremendous experience who are experts in their field.  Trust them to know which paths to take and which roads lead to success.  Cutting corners and taking short cuts are not part of our process and may leave gaps for your child.  Steady and planned progress wins the race every time!

We are super excited about this new school year and hope you are too.  Let us know if we can help in any way…we are not only your child’s Montessori guides, but yours as well.  Let us work together to build a strong foundation for your child and relationships that will last a lifetime!

Feel free to reach out with any questions you may have throughout the school year.  We are happy to help in any way that we can.

Here’s to a successful 2016-2017!  Thank you
