Summer is winding down and the school year is drawing closer! We are super excited about the new school year and looking forward to all of the new opportunities it has to offer. Can’t you just feel the excitement in the air?
This year, our students will engage in interesting lessons in so many areas. Lessons in Math, Science, History, Culture, Language, Writing, Sensorial and Practical Life are merely the foundation of what we are offering this school year! Combine that with Art, Spanish, Music, Physical Education and holiday celebrations and you may have just reached the cherry on this Montessori sundae!
As the new Principal of Montessori Corner at Princeton Meadows, I am very much looking forward to getting to know each and every child and parent enrolled with our school. There are so many things I can’t wait to share with all of you including the exciting “Principal in Training” program that will be introduced to our Kindergarten students. This program was piloted last year and it was met with student and parent enthusiasm. Our kindergartners will learn what it means to apply for a job when they are presented with applications for this position. Then, they will have the opportunity to show off their “Principal in Training” badges that they will wear as an outward symbol of their leadership and responsibility roles within our community. These badges will be kept at school every day as our students learn the responsibility of returning them each day. Our new “PIT (Principal in Training) Crew” will have opportunities throughout the school year to take on roles of leadership including helping their peers, running errands for the teacher and the office administration, overseeing daily chores within the school or classroom and so much more. The purpose is to continue to foster and develop the leader within our kindergartners so that as they prepare to move out of Montessori Corner after graduation and that the skills they have nurtured here will go with them into their future. It’s an exciting time in a student’s life and our Principal in Training program allows them to take everything they have learned up to this point and cultivate it in a new and exciting way! We will continue to keep you posted!
In addition to our Principal in Training program, we will be introducing Reader Leaders! This program is designed to encourage all of our students to practice their reading skills by hosting small group read alongs. Children will be paired up in groups and encouraged to host reading activities. As a child’s reading ability flourishes, so will his confidence! Not only does this activity encourage reading skills, but working in groups will foster team building skills, confidence, increased communication skills and so much more. We are really looking forward to this program and using our school library is another great way to keep the momentum going! Most recently, we added a really beautiful rug to our library space and we are currently in the process of adding a listening corner as a little bonus! The listening corner will allow students the opportunity to choose a story and follow along with a friend as each CD comes with two books. I believe this addition to our school will be embraced by all!
I do have a few more ideas up my sleeve, but I don’t want to share everything just yet! I look forward to a wonderful year and am every grateful that I have the opportunity of returning to my own Montessori roots here at Montessori Corner at Princeton Meadows. Having spent 14 years in the classroom here and having watched my own daughters graduate from Montessori Corner years ago, there is something special about this school and I am touched to be able to return and hopefully bring something back!
I look forward to working with each and every one of you as we build the best school ever!
